KW172026 Camouflage, Colourings and Markings of Aircraft - Jan 1941

Code letters are carried by Service types in operational units and operational training units. The two code letters, and one letter to indicated the individual aircraft, are to be painted in the appropriate colourand placed before and behind the roundels on the fuselage.

The letters are to be 48" high and are to be made up of strokes 6" wide - colour matt dull red.This RAF code letter sheet is suitable for the following aircraft, Lancaster Bomber, Halifax, Sterling, Wellingtons.

The AM order (x.798) to repaint codes from medium sea grey to dull red was issued in Jan 1941 - not all aircraft were immediately repainted however.

RAF Serial Numbers

In peacetime this number was applied to both sides at the rear of the fuselage, the undersurfaces of the main plane and on the rudder. The outbreak of war saw the removal of the underwing and rudder markings from all operational aircraft, except on training aircraft.

The fuselage Serial Number was common to all aircraft, and was to be 8" high, with no individual character wider than 5 inches. The stroke of the character being 1 inch.The serial number was specified by the AM, and painted on during production by the aircraft manufacturer and typestyles varied.
