Each star on the wand depicts two missions completed.
Delivered to MacDill AFB, Tampa, Florida, where the nose-art was painted. Left the USA in July 1942 and flew to SA, Gold Coast, Egypt and based near Haifi.
First mission was on the 14 August 1942.
1 May 1943 it flew into another aircraft whilst flying through heavy cloud. All of the crew returned to the USA in June 1943.

Started combat 13 May 1943 and was shot down near the Yugoslavia/ Bulgaria border by enemy fighters on the low level Ploesti mission 1 August 1943.

This aircraft originally served in the 344th BS as HAIL COLUMBIA. She was transferred to the 343rdBS where the left side art work was changed to GRUMPY in compliance with the Snow White Squadron directive.
The aircraft Broke up while landing at Cyprus following the low level Ploesti mission.

B-24D-CO 41-11840 The Witch 343BS 98BG - Libyan Desert 1943- 1943
On the return trip from Ploesti in a loose formation with three other B-24's The Witch was attacked by 6 Bf-109's.Darlington feathered No 4 engine and rang the bail-out bell. She lost altitude and crash landed close to town of Dubrovnik . 6 crewmen were POW's the other 4 escaped.
